Bensfort Lodge
Kells, County Meath
Bensfort Lodge is located near the Irish heritage town of Kells in the heart of County Meath. Just over one hour from Dublin, the old lodge has been refurbished to a very high standard and can sleep up to eight people. It is surrounded by rolling fields and enjoys complete tranquillity. As well as on-site tennis, some of the sporting attractions nearby include excellent fishing on the rivers Blackwater and Boyne and spectacular golf courses at Headford and Trim. Garden devotees are well catered for in Meath with beautiful Public grounds at Ballinlough Castle and Loughcrew estate. Meath is also famous for its equestrian character and enthusiasts can enjoy horse riding and racing at Navan and Fairyhouse all the year round.
Like most of Ireland, Meath is steeped in history. Evidence of this rich past is to be seen everywhere, particularly in the numerous ancient monuments that still survive such as the burial grounds at Knowth and Dowth and the world famous passage grave at Newgrange, which pre-dates the pyramids in Egypt. All of these magnificent cultural treasures are only a short drive from Bensfort lodge. Also close to the lodge is Tara Hill, said to be the meeting place for Ireland's High Kings, and closer again are the unspoilt megalithic tombs at Loughcrew.
Fifteen minutes drive away is the town of Trim, home to one of the finest surviving Norman Castles in Ireland: Trim Castle. The castle was the location for the shooting of much of the film Braveheart and today visitors can take guided tours of the interior or simply take a stroll in the castle grounds.
