The name of the town - Newcastlewest - is derived from the castle built by the Geraldines in the early 13th century. To date, the castle has been superbly restored and serves as a cultural centre in which lectures, concerts and exhibitions are held. An annual festival - called the Earl of Desmond festival named after the 4th Earl of Desmond - attracts a larger audience. Newcastlewest is situated on the N21 which is the main route between the counties of Limerick and Kerry.
