Horseshoe Cottage
Sherkin Island, County Cork
Ever since druids first discovered Sherkin Island, folk down the centuries have been drawn to the peace and solitude of this beautiful little island. Sherkin, the ancestral home of the O'Driscoll clan, is the most accessible island in Ireland. Ferries are frequent year round from Baltimore and also sail from Schull in the summer.
The island is just 3 miles long and a mile wide with a population of about 120. There are safe sandy beaches, rocky headlands , fuscia-scented byways and panoramic Atlantic views, also a fifteenth century Franciscan abbey.
